“I’m averaging about a kilo a month,” the ex-Bulldog and Bomber told those gathered in the Ovens and Murray league marquee.
Cooney said he played at 85-kilograms, was sitting at 94 and “tracking up” to 100.
But he joked in the EJ Whitten legends match: “I was still running rings around those other fat blokes.”
Cooney recalled playing with former North Albury coach Jason Akermanis at the Western Bulldogs and the fallout from the triple AFL premiership player’s loud mouth.
“He didn’t understand some of what he said affected us as well….but I get on well with Aker,” Cooney said.
The South Australian native has been involved in radio and television coverage of the AFL this year but suggested the retirement of St Kilda Nick Riewoldt could put his punditry in doubt.
Those in the Ovens and Murray marquee included member for Indi Cathy McGowan, member for Albury Greg Aplin and Wodonga councillor Danny Lowe.
