If we can’t rely on data, we have a right to be sceptical

When the Meteorological Bureau routinely tells us the previous year or even last August was the hottest on record we intuitively understand it to mean that they have simply added up the figures, so we assume it really was exceptional. But few of us realise the data isn't always sampled from the same weather stations and individual temperature series are remodelled.
