More than $850,000 will be spent on works at schools including Wodonga Middle Years College, Mount Beauty Secondary College, Yarrawonga P-12 College, and Rutherglen, Chiltern, Wangaratta, Porepunkah, and Tawonga primary schools.
Small works including the replacement of cabinets will begin within months and larger projects such as the removal of walls will be done over the next year.
Northern Victoria MLC Jaclyn Symes said all remaining asbestos that may pose a risk in the future would be removed by 2020.
“It is part of our plan to improve school infrastructure right across the state and ensure every school is safe and fit for purpose,” she said.
“We’re giving parents, teachers and students in Victoria’s North East peace of mind by removing asbestos that could pose a risk in the future, because there’s nothing more important than the health and safety of our kids.”
In a state-wide audit of 1712 government schools, 29 per cent were identified as containing high-risk asbestos, and it was removed from those 497 schools last year.
