Bureau of Crime Statistic and Research show assaults on or near licensed premises in Albury have dropped 44.9 per cent since 2008.
Australian Hotels Association Director of Liquor and Policing John Green was in Albury on Wednesday.
“In the last decade there were some problem venues and some people with antisocial attitudes,” he said.
“Licensees now have zero tolerance, they know their livelihood depends on people behaving.”
Mr Green said methamphetamine-related hospitalisations in the Murrumbidgee area, which includes Albury, were up 800 per cent since 2009.
He said it was good assaults had remained low despite the rise, but the jump was extremely concerning for staff dealing with users.
"Licensees and staff are at the coalface,” he said.
Mr Green said the association was working with Victoria Police to develop a policy to protect staff and patrons.
