“We thought we had won but we weren’t sure until you rang,” the wife told the official.
“My husband recently retired – you have no idea what this means for us! I just can’t believe it!
“I checked my emails this morning, and it said that we had won something, but it wouldn’t tell us the amount.
“We checked the numbers online and thought we may have won but we were just waiting for your phone call.
“We had breakfast and sat here and let it sink in while we waited!”
The over-the-moon couple who wish to remain anonymous purchased their ticket at Rutherglen News & Lotto, and said they would go on an overseas trip to celebrate.
“A big holiday overseas! We love travelling overseas but with my husband retiring early we weren’t sure when we’d be able to go,” she said.
“Now we are! Paris, Rome, London - we’ve been before but we are going back again!”
The couple have played the same numbers for years but said there was no significance behind them.
“We play the same numbers every week, we chose them at random a long time ago but we’ve just kept playing them,” she said.
“They are definitely significant now!”
Daniel Taborsky, owner of Rutherglen News & Lotto, said the outlet was thrilled to have sold their first division one prize.
“It’s very exciting! It’s our first division one prize we’ve ever sold so we are celebrating in the outlet with balloons and streamers everywhere!” he said.
“It is terrific for the outlet and for our small country town. We are so pleased a local and regular customer has won it.
“Congratulations to our winner – we hope they enjoy their prize!”
