The standout was the Wodonga Bushrangers’ tight win against Forest Hill Wombats in section two men.
A dominant singles rubber by Ashley Wurtz proved significant in Wombats’ three-game triumph with good support from Michael McMahon, Shane Tyas and Hayden McIntosh, while John McVean was unbeaten for Bushrangers.
Wodonga Bulldogs’ Andrew Healy, Travis Leenaerts and Nick Vicary all fired to nail a straightforward victory against Forest Hill Cats in section one action.
St Patricks/Diggerville (SPD) enjoyed their journey to Wangaratta, coming home with a comfortable salute against an under strength host unit.
Forest Hill Galahs dominated the singles rubbers, which set up their four sets to two win over Forest Hill Blues.
Ken Wurtz, Michael Reid and Mal Lieschke all played a role, with Zac Burhop best for the losers.
In section one ladies, three sets from Ceryn Campbell wasn’t quite enough as Wodonga Tigers went down in a hard-fought battle against Forest Hill.
An outstanding first stanza from Di Wurtz and Joan Landy was key in the Hill’s four-game victory.
A more experienced Wodonga Dodgers line up accounted for a spirited effort from a young SPD team.
Claire Hodgkin, Julie Morris, Sarah Coleman and Wendy Wolter were solid most of the afternoon, with Sophie Edgar in good touch for SPD.
Thurgoona Jade and Wodonga Larrikins were never threatened in lop sided victories over Wodonga Diamonds and Wodonga Slammers, respectively.
Section two men produced more entertaining tennis with Forest Hill Diggers accounting for SPD five sets to three.
Ross Graetz was unbeaten for the winners, with Shane Mumberson the star for SPD.
Three sets from Brendan Hoffman helped steer Sacred Heart to a 5-3 victory over Thurgoona Sharks.
Zac Smith and Travis Prater also played well, with Paul Craane and Carmine Adamo two-set winners for Sharks.
The final match saw Albury race away with the win against Forest Hill Magpies.
The pick of the section two ladies action was the four sets to two victory of Uiver Park over Glenly.
Jan Dihood was unbeaten for the winners, while Sue Carlin was best for the losers.
SPD were easy winners over Forest Hill.
Albury Blue played the big points well against Wodonga Pirates in section three men.
Saturday morning junior pennant and coaching commences this weekend with registrations from 9.15am.
Juniors aged from seven through to 14 are catered for.
Meanwhile, the second instalment of the North East Veteran’s tournaments is on Sunday at Wangaratta.
The $25 entry fee covers tennis, morning and afternoon teas and lunch, commencing at 10am.
