The painstaking process of dismantling the aircraft posed a number of challenges, but with the wings and engines now separated from the main body, Uiver Community Memorial Trust chairman Pieter Mol said teams of workers could now focus on restoring specific components.
“We’ve probably done more in the last two years compared to the last 20 or so,” he said.
“The aircraft has been broken down into the major components, which we’re now working on restoring and preserving until they;re ready to go back on the plane.
“It was definitely necessary to break it down, the project is a lot easier to manage now due to the size of some of the components.”
The Memorial Trust showed off the fruits of their labour during an open day on Saturday.
A team of around 25 volunteers work on the project.
