Glenn Rose, of the Albury-Wodonga Prostate Cancer Support Group, welcomed news the federal government had funded 14 new prostate cancer nurse positions, with one based in Albury.
“We think it will help men, their families and friends who experience a diagnosis,” he said.
“It will be great to have someone to answer all the questions you might have instead of waiting for your next doctor’s appointment.
“It can only improve and elevate the understanding of the needs of men.”
Mr Rose said having a dedicated nurse at the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre would also increase public awareness of the disease.
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said the nurse would provide advice and coordinated patient care.
“Someone diagnosed with prostate cancer will often need to see a range of health care professionals, including a urologist, general practitioner, radiologist and allied health staff,” she said
