Bird lovers are urged to take part in this year’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count during National Bird Week, which runs from October 23 to 29.
Those who want to participate can download the free app from aussiebirdcount.org.au.
BirdLife Australia and its Birds in Backyards Program have come together to create the Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
Participants in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count will help BirdLife Australia to find out about the common species that live where people live.
“It provides us with a snapshot of Australian birds at the same time each year, allowing us to look at the trends in our bird communities from year to year,” a spokesman said.
“This is important because it’s these more common species that give BirdLife Australia the best indication of the health of the environment. Think of birds as a barometer for nature!”
BirdLife Australia has been Australia’s voice for birds since 1901.
It is the country’s largest, independent, not-for-profit bird conservation organisation with specialised knowledge and the commitment of the extensive network of members, volunteers and supporters that work together to create a bright future for Australia’s native birds.
Aussie Backyard Bird Count participants can count as many times as they like over the week, making sure that each count is done over a 20-minute period.
They can count in their backyard, local park, school yard or any outdoor space.
The event is supported by Wodonga Council.
