Eldorado’s Maureen Hearne told this week’s Wangaratta Council meeting, held at the town hall, that the “gentleman’s place of relief” could not cope with a recent bowls day attended by 60 people.
“The toilets are inadequate, I feel there should be a suitable toilet for people with disabilities,” she said.
“I know that committee are trying to do things as quickly as they possibly can, but it’s not happening fast enough.”
As Eldorado Memoral Hall committee members were looking into ways to raise the $24,000 needed for a new roof, they were also stunned by a new council policy that could shut them down.
President John Bell told councillors he was concerned the hall could be taken over by an incorporated body.
“We had a few things we’re not so happy with and one was to do with the fact the council could just remove the committee at any one time and there was no real procedure or any need for us to state our case,” he said.
“It’s really a community hall, we as a community work for this hall.”
The council promised to work with him on the concerns.
Council chief executive Brendan McGrath said community grants were available for buildings works and there would be a focus on rural townships in the budget over the coming years.
“We are very lucky as a shire to have a number of classic old halls that are old very deserving of restoration,” he said.
