Pressure is building on VicRoads to re-consider its support for the grey route following over-whelming support of the green route in the plebiscite conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
Irvine Parade is one of the key feeder roads to the grey route.
The staff recommendation is for council to confirm its ongoing support for the green route and continue its advocacy with key decision makers.
The key decision makers also include NSW Roads and Maritime Services which has backed VicRoads support for the grey route.
“With a strong and clear community view confirmed through the independent and rigorous VEC plebiscite, it is timely for council to reconfirm its support for the green route as the preferred alignment for a future Yarrawonga-Mulwala bridge,” the meeting agenda states.
“Council’s advocacy efforts will involve sharing the results with key decision makers and seeking a commitment that they listen and respond to a clearly articulated community view.”
The council last considered a position on the bridge route in 2013.
The plebiscite had a participation rate of 56.5 per cent which the VEC advised council was a “very strong level of participation” for a voluntary postal vote.
The plebiscite confirmed 3159 votes in favour of the green route and 968 votes in favour of the grey route.
There were 843 informal votes from the 4987 ballots received by the deadline on September 22.
VicRoads conducted two more information sessions in Yarrawonga on the bridge issue in September with its support for the grey route maintained.
“We are now in the final stages of the planning process,” the VicRoads website states.
“This third phase involves preparing an environmental effects statement (EES) referral for submission by October 2017.
“This is an important step as it will determine whether a full EES is required.”
