I write regarding the inventive comments made by Tim Fischer (‘Fischer wary of shooters’, The Border Mail, October 18) in his attack on firstly the Shooters Fishers and Farmers party at the NSW byelections and Australian gun owners in general.

I am not a member of any political party including SFFP but did support their excellent candidate in Murray who incidently is a non-recreational shooter and farmer.
The comments by Mr Fischer in the article were verging on the point of scandalous, especially when coupled with those of his and his old master’s open propaganda letter which was also allegedly distributed at booths.
To put Mr Fischer’s comments in context, we are not America and we have never had their social problems or wanted their firearm laws and types of legal firearms. If they were used here, they were used by criminals – not legal owners – and they still are.
The distorting of statistics from the United States to scare and confuse people by the NSW government to try and cling to power by whatever dishonest means possible is disgusting but today (with Google etc), they are easily disproved.
There are many times more deaths and lives destroyed just by, for example, doctors with prescription pads than total gun deaths of all types including police, gangs, self defence and even suicide in the US.
As with any problem you need to attack the cause not the effect.
But if guns kill people then pencils misspell words, cars drive drunk and spoons make people fat, and all can be just as dangerous as guns.

Story of inspiration
The Jodie O'Sullivan article (‘A Place to Call Home’, The Border Mail, October 11) about God's angelic helpers is not only an important one for all of us, but one of inspiration about how people can help others in order to bring great benefit to those caught in life conditions that can be difficult to escape.
I believe the story applies to many young people who often through circumstances they have no control over can lodge them in dark places that can seem hopeless and inescapable to get out of.
Awareness of one such person's life condition has prompted action and the results have probably saved a young soul from being overpowered by seemingly insurmountable odds. I think the 11/10 article is one of the most interesting and awareness-inclining The Border Mail has published this year – or any other.
Sometimes in life God measures our worth not so much by the things we can do, but by the things we can't but try to.

Objections just ignored
As a regular observer at meetings I left in anger at the Federation Council's decision to dismiss 43 objections that had been lodged to a car wash in central Corowa, particularly as three of the new councillors are not local residents and I believe are not familiar with the demographics and therefore unsuitability of the site.
Vehicular and pedestrian traffic, a walking track and loss of peaceful green space have been ignored.
I would like to say thank you Councillors Longmire and Law for their comments, and to David Johnston (The Border Mail) for his excellent coverage.
