Christine Watson died in Albury on Friday after a battle with breast cancer which began in 2011 just after her 50th birthday.
In July she spoke to The Border Mail while promoting a breast cancer fundraiser she organised with Racing Wodonga.
“It’s about an opportunity to give back and say thank-you, to celebrate life and to live in the present and enjoy the present,” Mrs Watson said.
She said Breast Cancer Network Australia, the beneficiary of the fundraiser, had been a great help to her and her family in tackling the disease armed with adequate knowledge.
“That empowerment’s really important at a time where you feel like any control or power you have has been completely stripped away,” Mrs Watson said.
Raised at Wangaratta and Coleambally, Mrs Watson became a physiotherapist.
She met John in 1985 and their 30th wedding anniversary is next Monday.
Mrs Watson’s long-term employer Rehabilitation Outcomes remarked that her optimism through illness was inspiring, in a death notice in The Border Mail.
Wodonga Council lauded Mrs Watson as “a much-loved community member and great contributor to our city”.
Mrs Watson is survived by her husband and three sons George, Digby and Dugald.
A memorial service will be held at The Scots School Albury from 11am this Wednesday with donations to Breast Cancer Network Australia appreciated.
Cr Watson has been on compassionate leave from Wodonga Council since last month to attend to his wife.
