Parvovirus: attacks the intestines causing blood-stained diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Severe dehydration is a result and requires intensive veterinary care. Outbreaks occur more regularly through the summer. Direct contact with another dog is not necessary for spread of the disease. The virus can survive in the environment for up to 12 months and is essentially responsible for the ongoing outbreaks of the disease every year.
Distemper: a highly contagious viral disease with puppies at the highest risk. Symptoms include fever, coughing and sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, muscle tremors, fits and paralysis. Treatment is often ineffective and those that do survive generally suffer permanent brain damage.
Canine cough: this is similar to the human flu. There are several strains however the two most serious strains are Bordetella and Parainfluenza. It most easily spreads when dogs socialise. Symptoms include a dry hacking cough, fever, runny nose, eye discharge and decreased energy levels.
We recommend a new puppy begin its vaccination program from six to weeks weeks of age as mother’s antibodies will give it a temporary immunity up to this age.
We recommend you take your new puppy or adult dog to your vet as soon as possible, so a vaccination program can be implemented, ensuring them the best protection from these deadly diseases.
