Mayor Pat Bourke confirmed an approach to the state government via member for Albury Greg Aplin about covering part of the cost in dumping its highest paid staffer would be discussed by the council.

The NSW Government-appointed administrator Mike Eden extended the former general manager’s contract until 2020 last December.

But less than two months since the return of councillors Mr Gillard has been given his marching orders with an unconfirmed, but substantial payout.

“It’s going to have to come out of council coffers and that is how it normally happens,” Cr Bourke said.

“But it would be nice to think there would be some state government funding available.

“You would be foolish not to ask the question.”

Mr Aplin couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Cr Bourke said it wasn’t clear how long Peter Gall would need to juggle the acting general manager role and director of infrastructure and environment which is responsible for big-ticket items including engineering and planning.

Mr Gall has been at Federation less than six months when he took over the role from former Urana general manager Adrian Butler.

Mr Butler is presently working at Wagga Council in a short-term role and shapes as a possible contender to replace Mr Gillard when the position is officially advertised in coming weeks.
