“They’ve definitely got some good kids, they’re a bit like us, the way they go about it in bringing their kids through,” Yarrawonga Mulwala’s Reid Clarke said.
“Colts are pretty consistent, they’re not too extravagant, with the bat or ball, they just go out there and try to get the job done, a bit like us.”
Fraser Ellis and Dylan Adams open the attack for Colts, while Will Creed is coming off a top-scoring 43 in the 12-run win over Wangaratta Magpies.
“Will’s come on in the last year or so,” Clarke said.
“He’s been playing a bit of rep cricket and his off-spin bowling’s come along a fair way and he can definitely hold a bat through that middle order.”
The Lakers too have some outstanding talent, including the competition’s runaway leading wicket-taker.
“Jim Irvine’s been killing it with the new ball, he’s a big left-arm bowler who’s taken five-fors in the last two games,” Clarke said.
“And Matt Casey is one who’s probably relished being up the order.
“We’ve put him at number three to give him a crack to make some scores and he’s definitely proved he can.”
Casey sits second on the run-scorer’s list with 188 at 62.67.
But even the impressive top order player’s tally pales in comparison with team-mate Josh Lawrence, who has 324 runs at 81, including two centuries.
Both the Lakers and City Colts have won their first four games.
“Since I’ve been playing A grade (four years), they’ve always been in the top two or three sides,” Clarke said.
The clash is one of two featuring unbeaten teams.
Second-placed Beechworth is home to Rovers United Bruck.
The Wanderers have already had the bye but, despite that, sit just under three points behind the classy Lakers.
Rovers have won their four games.
Meanwhile, Wangaratta Magpies are chasing their first win at home against Greta, while Delatite is looking to push into the top four when it plays host to Benalla Bushrangers, who sit just above Ovens Valley United.
