It would be fair to say many a mayor and councillor has been accused of talking rubbish from time to time.

But on Friday the “trash talk” was more than appropriate as mayors and councillors from councils across the region were given a guided tour of Cleanaway’s new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at its Lavington depot.
Key stakeholders from the Halve Waste councils of Albury, Wodonga, Indigo and Alpine shires as well as Federation and Greater Hume got up close and personal with the rubbish ratepayers recycle into their yellow kerbside bins.
The MRF, which began operation in September, has the capacity to process up to 2700 tonnes of recyclable materials each month.
It’s currently processing about 1000 tonnes collected from local homes and businesses in the region.
The tour allowed representatives to see what happens at the coal-face with the new recycling plant sorting materials using a combination of high-tech equipment and manual labour.
Albury branch manager David Collins walked and talked them through the process of sorting items into different streams, including cardboard, paper, plastics, glass, steel and aluminium.
The new facility includes a diversion line for large cardboard, increasing the quality of cardboard recycling by minimising contamination.
All agreed sustainability is never a waste of time.
