Albury Marriage Equality’s Toni Johnson plans to be with her partner for the 10am announcement, when they will find out if enough Australians voted “yes” to allow them to marry.
She said negativity during the eight-week campaign on the Border has not been too bad, but some people had experienced homophobia they had never seen before.
“There are still a lot of anxieties around,” Ms Johnson said.
“It’s brought out the worst in people - it’s given people the right to say they voted no and say why.”
WayOut Wodonga and headspace Albury Wodonga will host an event at Gateway Health Wodonga from 9.30am Wednesday for the survey announcement.
WayOut Wodonga support officer Sheridan Williams said the survey’s impact had been huge.
“We wanted to provide a safe and supportive environment where we can deal with the implications of the results together,” she said.
“Whatever the results, we’re expecting people will still be feeling the effects of the survey for quite some time to come. “LGBTIQ+ communities are strong and resilient, but now is the time to lean on each other.”
Albury Marriage Equality will host also an event at 6.30pm Wednesday at Brown Lagoon so the LGBT community can talk through any frustrations or concerns they still have about what the bill may look like.
