Told she was clear of breast cancer in March, Mrs Groves had a near cardiac arrest when blockages in her lungs starved her of oxygen during a fall at home in April.
“I had my 30th wedding anniversary and 60th birthday coming up and I almost missed both of them,” she said.
Mrs Groves said she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in March 2016 after a routine mammogram.
“They found the lump,” she said.
“I couldn’t feel anything until they pressed on it and I jumped.”
Following a lumpectomy, Mrs Groves had six rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation.
“My oncologist told me it will be 18 days to the day you’ll be bald from the first chemotherapy,” she said.
“It was exactly 18 days.”
Coincidentally, Mrs Groves’ youngest sister Robyn beat breast cancer the year before after 12 months of treatment.
“The cancer wasn’t familial but it was like I was tip-toeing in my sister’s footsteps,” she said.
Having moved to Lavington almost five years ago with husband Rob, Mrs Groves said she joined the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund fundraising committee six months ago to give back to the community.
She retired from her job in aged care after April’s fall.
“I gave up my work but I wanted to give back to the community,” she said.
Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund will host its next fundraiser event, Diner en Blanc, on Saturday, November 25.
Inspired by the world famous secret dinner party phenomenon, guests dress in white for an al fresco dinner party at a mystery location.
Fundraising manager Jane Evans said guests would meet in QEII Square before going to a secret location.
“We’re hoping to have about 150 people immaculately dressed in white meet at QEII Square,” she said.
“There will be live entertainment by the fabulous Toucan Rock and lucky door prizes as well as a silent auction.”
Diner en Blanc began in Paris in 1988 when Francois Pasquier returned home from abroad and wanted to reconnect with his friends.
