The bill, introduced by Nationals MP Trevor Khan, was voted down 20-19 in the upper house close to midnight on Thursday.
Mr Aplin said after feedback to his Border Mail column on the issue he believed the bulk of his electorate opposed legalising euthanasia.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people and I would have reflected their views in my speech, which obviously I won’t be able to give now,” he said.
“The majority of the people who wrote to me and my research showed that we are not ready to do that.
“It’s not something that I would have been in favour of and I would be representing roughly two-thirds of the people that wrote to me.”
