After competing in the Classic Triathlon at Shepparton last weekend, Sandral won the 300m swim, 13km ride and 3km run in a time of 40 minutes, 49 seconds.

Laura Gillard came runner-up in 43:02, with Rachael Long third on 43:23.

Sandral said she enjoyed taking part in the race.

“There is always a really good atmosphere,” Sandral said.

“It’s good to win but I just enjoy the day.”

Sandral has been a regular in the women’s only triathlon since it started and joins a strong list of winners including Julie Gollan-Foard and Taryn Heather.

The race started in waves five minutes apart to cater for the big field.

Sandral’s long-term goal is competing in the Port Macquarie Ironman in May.

“That’s the plan at this stage,” she said.

Organiser Nadia Mellor said she was thrilled with the capacity field of 220 competitors aged between 12 and 65.

Money raised from this year’s event will go to Upper Murray Family Care’s Kids in Trust program.

“We had 220 women out there participating which shows how far we have come since we started,” Mellor said.

“There was a great response from sponsors, volunteers and members from our club.

“Women of all shapes and sizes on mountain bikes and expensive bikes took part and it was fantastic to see everyone supporting the day.”

Mellor said it was difficult to fathom how far the event had come in the past nine years.

“I struggle to believe it sometimes,” she said.

“Going from 20 or 30 to 200 is unbelievable.

”I’m very grateful of the women who support it.

“We had a lot of first-timers and also a lot of women who keep coming back each year.

“I would encourage them to keep coming back.”

Meanwhile, the club will host a mini-triathlon on December 3.
