Fixed wireless coverage is already live in parts of each town, but the fixed line network is expected to be available in May for Yarrawonga-Mulwala, and in April for Mount Beauty and Tawonga South.
Works are also underway in Benalla where eligible households will be able to switch to the fixed line network between July and September.
Head of NBN local Victoria and Tasmania Ebony Aitken said across the six towns, including Mansfield, more than 12,600 homes and businesses would be connected by the works.
“By the second half of 2018, these residents and businesses will have access to fast broadband – something that has been desperately needed in regional and rural Australia,” she said.
“In May next year about 3300 homes and businesses in parts of Yarrawonga and Mulwala will be able to order an NBN-powered plan from a phone or internet provider.
“The remaining 4000 homes and businesses in Yarrawonga are expected to be able to make the switch in August 2018.”
The NBN’s roll-out map shows a mix of fibre to the node and fibre to the curb infrastructure is planned for each area.
Ms Aitken said it was ideal people speak with their phone or internet provider about the speed tiers available in their area, as well as the actual speeds they can expect to experience, particularly during peak times.
“People should also keep in mind that 25 megabits or above is considered a super-fast broadband speed,” she said.
“A retail plan based on NBN’s wholesale 12/1 speed tier is not considered super-fast and is likely to be comparable with the current ADSL service many people have.”
