A 7.98-hectare parcel of land will be subdivided to create 59 housing lots called Waldara Golf Estate, accessed off Wangaratta-Yarrawonga Road.
The panel’s report, recommending minor changes to boundaries in the subdivision, was unanimously accepted by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting.
It ended a long process for the golf club, which started when the previous council supported the project before it was sacked in 2013, then administrators backflipped on the plans.
Cr Dean Rees said it was important the city take positive actions.
“This development of the golf course has been a long time coming,” he said.
“It’s a change for the Rural City of Wangaratta that’s a good change.
“We are going to offer diversity of land, obviously prices will also be in a new range I imagine and it will be one of the premier subdivisions in Wangaratta.
“This is a great thing for the golf club itself to be able to update facilities and go ahead with making the golf club a greater golf club over the next five to 10 years with this exorcision of the land from golf club land.
“Change is always a hard thing to accept in life and changing of this golf club is a good thing.”
Golf club president Rob Holloway said the fact the plan was quickly accepted by councillors on Tuesday showed the issues had been resolved.
“It’s been a long time in the works and there’s been some fantastic work by people to get it where it is,” he said.
“We can now move forward with our plans to redevelop the course … It’s for the future of the club.”
Approval for the housing development had been described as the key to the golf club’s survival.
The final step will be approval from the Victorian planning minster, which was expected to proceed smoothly with approval from the council and independent panel.
Work on a new course and relocated clubhouse will begin as soon as details of the housing estate are finalised between the club and developers.
