The $21 chance raced to an early lead and never let up to hold out Moonlight Duchess ($8.50) and Faramondo ($11) over 1400m.
“We experimented a little bit, so I said to Bec (jockey Rebeka Prest) ‘be aggressive on him because he’s super fit’,” Duryea said.
“Just make them chase, just make them chase and we were either going to be real right or real wrong.”
Duryea picked right in the four-year old’s fifth run.
“He hasn’t got a massive turn of foot, (the breeder Justin) his horses are big and strong and this bloke’s no exception, so if they’ve got a bit of early pace, you try and use it,” he said.
Meanwhile another Border and North East trainer also had early success.
Wangaratta’s Steve Cunningham guided Makahu Boy home over 1100m in what was the seven-year old’s first start.
