‘We jumped good, the plan was to be positive, we didn’t have to lead, but was happy to do so,” he said.
“We got a soft run in the mid stages and he had a really good kick at the top of the straight, they were going to struggle to catch him.
“I know we were getting a bit tired, but we pinched a good break.”
Trainer Michael Roebuck was delighted with Thornton’s ride.
“He’s flying, I don’t know how many winners he’s ridden in the last 50 rides, but he’s flying, I was happy to have him,” he said.
Thornton has been riding for just over six years.
“There’s a lot of people around me who’ve helped me to get where I am, they’ve played just as big a part as I am with riding the winners,” he said.
It was Thornton’s second ride for the meeting after he finished fifth on Smuggling in race two.
