THURGOONA’S ongoing traffic snarls at peak periods could come to head early next year.
Cr Darren Cameron will use the final council meeting of the year to chase support for a community forum in the area in January to pinpoint the priority areas for attention.
Albury Council and NSW Roads and Maritime Services have been piecing together a city-wide traffic strategy with a large focus on the city’s growth corridor in Thurgoona.
The Thurgoona-Wirlinga corridor has been earmarked to accommodate a major share of the city’s future population.
“Clearly there are real problems emerging in relation to traffic in Thurgoona,” Cr Cameron said.
“As we know there is a long lead in to actually building the roads we need to provide the relief required.
“In all honesty it could take years.
“We need to be having robust discussions with the NSW Roads and Maritime Services about the lack of interchanges and nature of the interchanges to the Hume Freeway.
“We need to act now to resole these long-standing issues.”
Also, council this year converted a notorious intersection on Thurgoona Drive in Lavington to a roundabout with further roundabouts at Elizabeth Mitchell Drive and Kerr Road to be upgraded in coming years.
RMS and council have been approached for an update on the status of the traffic strategy.
“The Albury traffic study is a technical working document which is being updated to reflect recent feedback from Albury Council,” a RMS spokespeson said.
“RMS will continue to work with council to action outcomes from the study.”
The council declined to comment on when the study would be released.
It was reported in August that the council had received a draft copy of the study and had provided feedback to the RMS.
