The rented Ware Avenue home Mr Byrne shares with his wife, Sarah, and two children was partially flooded when a stormwater drain in the street overflowed during heavy rain on Friday night.
Sections of the carpet in the couple’s bedroom, at the front of the house, were soaked and their garage was awash with ankle-deep water.
“I rang the SES and they came around with some sandbags but there wasn’t much they could do,” Mr Byrne said.
A tree root mass is believed to have clogged the drain and workers attended to clear the blockage later in the morning.
“The water was sitting across the street, flowing through our shed and into the backyard,” Mr Byrne said.
He said it had pooled to about 20cm from the ground outside the couple’s bedroom window.
The children were sent to a relative’s house as the Byrnes focused on cleaning up the mess while the landlord was alerted to the damage.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Mrs Byrne said.
“Luckily we’ve got contents insurance.”
The family’s pet rabbit was rescued from a low point in the garden.
