While Morey hopes to regularly be in Essendon’s VFL team, he has nominated the Nathan Grima-coached Strathmore as his second club.

“I’m just trying to save myself some travel after being at uni in Melbourne for the past three years,” the 22-year-old said.

“I want to play as high a level as possible too.

“I’m close to 100 games at Yarra and my family is really involved but the travel just gets the better of you after a while.

“It was tough to leave.

“Hopefully I’ll go back one day.”

Morey, who won Yarrawonga’s best and fairest in 2016, played one match for Essendon this year and goes with the blessing of Pigeon coach Damien Sexton.

“I reckon it’s great,” Sexton said.

“He’s trying to better himself which is terrific.

“We hope it works and long-term I’m sure he will come back at some stage.”

Morey was solid for Yarrawonga this season but battled several injuries including breaking his arm against Myrtleford in July.

He courageously played out the match after injuring himself in the opening minutes.

Livewire Wangaratta Rovers’ forward Alex Marklew is on Essendon’s list but will return to the Hawks next year instead of playing for Doutta Stars.

Former North Albury big-man Isaac Muller is also a Bomber who played in Bundoora’s flag in the Northern Football League.
