The 30-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Wodonga County Court on Thursday.
He is facing charges of soliciting and transmitting child pornography material between July 17 and 18.
Judge Gerard Mullaly approved the request to have the matter heard in Melbourne, because the solicitor and prosecutors are based there and the defendant did not want to appear in Wodonga.
He overruled a suppression order, which previously banned media from reporting on the case.
“Why shouldn’t the public know that if you’re going to solicit child pornography, there could be a police officer on the other end of the phone?” he said.
The case was adjourned until March 15.
