Wodonga Council on Monday night agreed to a $516,885 tender from Melbourne company Tiger Turf Australia.
It will be the first new surface since the pitches were formed in 1996.
Wodonga Hockey Club president Alan Warhurst said division one matches were not played at the ground and the shock pad underneath the artificial turf had worn away making it “very hard on the knees”.
“The players don’t really like coming to Wodonga to play because it’s so hard,” Mr Warhurst said.
The new surface should be installed by March 30 with Tiger Turf planning an opening clinic with Australian hockey players.
The city is paying $345,000 for the work and Hockey Albury Wodonga $175,000.
