They unanimously voted at Tuesday’s meeting in favour of a recreational vehicle dump point at Wareena Park in Swan Street.
Wangaratta resident Ron Summers supported the move to create an “RV-friendly town”, but said the council also needed signs to direct vehicles where to park.
“I’d like to commend the council on finally biting the bullet and undertaking to put in a dump point for RVs, and I think the location is pretty good,” he said.
“It won’t be just people coming into town, it’ll be locals who use it - and me being one of them. It will make it so much easier when we come back (from travels) to go to a point, empty everything out and fill up … there’s a lot of nomads around Wang.”
Chief executive Brendan McGrath said the council would apply to have to location listed with RV groups and Google maps.
The council report stated the need to take advantage of the growing popularity of motorhomes and caravan touring, but would not allow camping at Wareena Park because it could affect existing tourist parks.
RVs can camp without facilities for multiple days before needing to remove waste from showers and toilets.
Most have the capacity to hold up to about 180 litres of water in holding tanks.
The estimated installation cost for Wareena Park was $9345 and it will cost $1530 each year to operate.
The council hoped the site would reduce illegal dumping of wastewater from caravans and motorhomes in Wangaratta.
It is scheduled to be installed before the end of June 2018.
