Telecommunications company Optus revealed on Sunday night that it would donate the four-metre by two-metre electronic boards as part of its investment in the Border.

Representatives of North Albury Sports Club and Wodonga Diamonds soccer club, which plays at La Trobe, were on hand for the announcement at Albury’s Hovell Tree Park as part of a movie night sponsored by Optus.

Optus state market manager for Victoria Con Andrikopoulos said the recipients had been chosen based on advice from Albury and Wodonga councils.

The boards, which will allow replays and live footage, are expected to be be installed by February.

Diamonds secretary Gary Holt said World Cup soccer matches would be shown on the screen next year.

He said training sessions would be replayed on the board “so they can look at what they did wrong”.

Sports club president Dean Luhrs said it was a welcome investment in Bunton Park, which hosts football and cricket matches.

“It’s an excellent result, we still can’t believe it,” he said.

The screen will be in front of the manual scoreboard built in the early 1980s.

“It will go over the whole scoreboard,” Mr Luhrs said.

“It will be great for sponsors.”

Mr Luhrs expects the AFL grand final will air on the board which will also promote events at the club’s bowls rinks.
