A top of 42 degrees has been tipped for today, the first 40 degree day in December since 2015.
The temperature topped that benchmark just five times the previous summer – twice in January and three times in February.
A lingering high pressure system over the Tasman Sea is behind a heatwave affecting much of Australia’s eastern seaboard.
