Travis Scott Adams, 33, recently appeared in Albury Local Court after leaving a USB stick with the images lying around at his Lavington home.
His partner had moved into the home in late 2016 and noticed the thumb drive on the ledge of a veranda.
Adams watched as the woman picked up the device and told her it wasn’t his, claiming someone else had left it there.
They both moved into a house in Wodonga in January and the woman again spotted the USB stick, which she put into her handbag.
She went to the Wodonga Library the following month to use a computer and plugged in the device, curious to see what was it contained.
She opened a folder and recognised photos from Adams’ phone.
Another folder had images of naked children aged four to six, which left his partner feeling distressed.
She told two friends, and all three confronted Adams on February 8.
He admitted to putting the images from his phone onto the drive but said it belonged to a mate.
When the group suggested they go to the police station, the 33-year-old panicked and refused to go.
He fled to Queensland.
The drive was eventually examined in September, with 307 child abuse images found.
Police said 45 images were considered category one, showing kids aged two to 13 engaged in sex acts, while the remaining photos were category two, depicting exposed children aged four to 15.
Officers tracked him down to the Wodonga home on October 1 but he gave a false name.
Police arrested him the following day when they realised he’d lied.
He gave multiple versions of how he came to possess the material during questioning.
Albury Local Court heard Adams, who is in custody in Junee, must undergo a sex offender assessment before he is sentenced on February 14.
