I’m not sure if you’re aware yet but the Murray River Erosion Management Committee is preparing a draft management plan to try and address bank erosion on the 50-kilometre stretch of the Murray River between Corowa and Bundalong, at the top end of Lake Mulwala.
One option in the draft is to ban wake boats from the area and accumulate data on what difference, if any, that makes to the data the Murray Darling Basin Authority has been collecting for the past nine years.
Wake boats, as the name suggests, are designed to create a massive wake and from a fisho’s point of view, aren’t really all that much fun to be around and, in fact, can be quite dangerous if you’re in a small tinnie.
There’s been two cases that I personally know of where small tinnies have gone under after being swamped by wake boats.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for having a good time but I’d find it hard to argue for the use of wake boats within the confines of a river bank where they obviously bring pleasure to a few but create drama for just about every other river user.
Canoeists, fishos and even skiers can all co-exist at the same time on the same stretch of river, but bring in one wake boat and things change dramatically.
Anyhow, if you want to have a say for or against, you can jump on the computer and go to www.rms.nsw.gov.au where you can see what’s happening and leave some feedback.
Keep in mind that’s something I’m sure most wake boat owners will be doing.
At A Glance
Dartmouth – has been ok without being brilliant.
The trout are definitely down a fair bit now so downriggers, paravanes, lead line etc. are the order of the day.
Don’t forget the ‘Macca’ (Macquarie Perch) season opens on January 1 too.
There’s only a bag limit of one fish, so I wouldn’t expect too many fishos to be racing up there, but it’s just nice to know that you’ll be able to target them from Monday.
Streams – are great, with most fishos having no problems catching a feed.
All methods are working well but with the odd storm going through it might be worth a look on the computer to see how much your particular favourite stream may have copped, just in case.
Khancoban Pondage – has also been ok with a few trout showing up for those trolling early and late.
There’s been a few picked up on mudeyes under bubble floats as well.
The Snowy Lakes all seem to be producing a few nice fish at the moment too.
