Reigning league and cup champions Myrtleford have been given the opportunity to clash with South Melbourne as part of the NPL giants’ pre-season.
Savoys co-coach Jayden Vescio said his offsider Matt Park used his contacts to make the match a possibility.
“The last five years have been pretty successful down at Myrtleford for one of the smallest teams in AWFA,” Vescio said.
“He (Park) wanted to show the boys the professional environment down there and through some contacts he had we were able to get a friendly organised.
“Some of our older boys that have been at the club a long time haven’t gone down that NPL 2 path, so it’s really good for them to have a crack at those sort of blokes.
“We obviously went really deep last year, so we did about a month (of training) before Christmas and we’ve got a pretty packed pre-season schedule which kicks off this weekend against South.
“Hopefully we can build a pretty good relationship down there with them and get them up to Myrtleford in the next couple of years.”
The game kicks-off at 11am at Lakeside Stadium.
Vescio added plenty of work has been done at Savoy Park, thanks to a major volunteer effort, and it will be in top condition for round one.
