Adrian James Whitehead, 42, appeared briefly in Albury Local Court on Tuesday.
He strongly denies the single charge of assault actual bodily harm over the incident in Thurgoona on September 10.
Whitehead stepped aside as senior coach of Hume Football League club Holbrook after he was charged over the alleged assault that left a woman with facial injuries.
Defence solicitor Tim Hemsley said he believed there would be nine witnesses “and five different versions of what occurred”.
“It’s a matter where the brief has not been served,” he said.
The case against Whitehead, the youngest player in Carlton’s 1995 premiership-winning side, will return to court on February 27.
