However, at that time our agricultural commodity markets, so dependant on the “Old Country”, were severely disrupted.
Our trade officials were caught flat-footed exposing our industries to harsh global reality while the Kiwis slipped seamlessly into the changed conditions, protected by lengthy phased-in commodity market opportunities negotiated by very skilled, home-grown New Zealand operators.
Time will tell if lessons have been learnt by our trade officials, but the Kiwis continue to lead the way as canny traders, perhaps because of a rurally-based economy.
