Our Cashier ($1.80), ridden by Lachlan Dale, came from barrier 12 to claim the Bailey’s Removal and Storage Maiden Plate (1400m) by less than half-a-length from Kym Davison’s Tycoon Dreaming, with the Nick Olive-trained Bella Deluxe third.
O’Prey admitted the writing had been on the wall for some time with Our Cashier finishing fourth or better in its first five runs.
“He’s obviously been a promising horse from the outset,” O’Prey said.
“Every run he’s had, he’s nearly been the best run of the race and had to combat bad barriers and tricky starts.
“It was good the way he did it today because once again he didn’t have any favours.
“Lachie was very complementary about him.
“He had to do it pretty hard, but that was always going to the case from a wide barrier.”
O’Prey expects the three-year-old gelding to go through its grades given he’s only in his second race preparation.
“He’ll have a 10-day break or so and we’ll get him ready for a race in the Albury Cup carnival,” O’Prey added.
Tubbs Gift will race over 2000 metres at Benalla next Wednesday after its win at Wangaratta on January 2, while First Ammendment will also make its first start for O’Prey after being transferred from the Hayes’ stable at Euroa.
