David O’Prey continued his impressive start to 2018 with Our Cashier breaking its maiden in the day’s second race over 1400 metres.
Craig Widdison extended his recent run of winning form at Albury through Mr Fergus, who won the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1600m) immediately after O’Prey’s triumph.
Peter Maher made it three in a row for Wodonga-based trainers in race four, with I’m Peter comfortably claiming the Class 3 Handicap (1400m).
Widdison was delighted with Mr Fergus, who bounced back from a poor run at Wangaratta last start.
“I’ve got a bit of an opinion of him, he’s just a really slow maturer,” Widdison said.
“I don’t know what happened at Wang last time, but it was good to see him going forward again this time.
“He’ll get over further and I like him as a horse.”
It was Widdison’s fifth Albury winner in the space of a month.
“I don’t know what it is, but I hope it continues,” he said.
“A few of them like the big, open tracks, and it’s always a good track here and not far to travel.”
Albury’s Kym Davison joined the party with Vinnie Vega storming home to win the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m), the sixth race on the card.
Vinnie Vega made it four wins in a row over that distance at his home track.
“He just loves his home track and ride him cold and he’s got a terrific turn of foot for 300 metres,” Davison said.
“We were pretty confident today and he always performs well here which is good.
“He’s had a couple of excuses, he was unlucky at Seymour after his last win here.
“He got held up and couldn’t get a crack at them until the race was all over.
“We gave him a bit of a break and he got in a bumping duel with Cash Crisis at Corowa which cost both horses, so he didn’t really get a true crack at them that day.
“But he trained on well and we were expecting a good effort today.”
Davison will see how the five-year-old pulls up before looking for another race in the next few weeks.
Vinnie Vega capped off a strong day for Davison who also grabbed a second with Tycoon Dreaming in race two.
Wangaratta’s Steve Cunningham claimed a double win Funding ($4.80) taking out the first of the program, before Absolutelycertain ($18) caused a upset to grab victory in the fifth.
Jerilderie’s Phil Sweeney captured the last with Moving On Up ($11).
