Archie Thompson took the region by storm last season by committing to the Wodonga-based outfit full-time in his home town, but has hinted he could play for Moreland City in 2018.

Moreland City has moved into the NPL 2 east league and therefore will meet Murray United twice throughout the season.

The two sides will square off in round two at La Trobe on February 24.

Thompson, now 39, announced he wouldn’t return to Murray United for another year in the penultimate round last season, but didn’t rule out playing elsewhere.

However, with his ever-increasing schedule of television commitments with the A-League and various ambassador roles within the soccer community, it remains unclear if he will extend his career.

Thompson wouldn’t be the first player from the Border to play with Moreland City, with Trent Rixon, who has returned to Melrose this season, finishing his NPL career last year as Moreland’s leading goal-scorer.

“I might be playing a little bit of football this year and it might be against Murray,” Thompson said at Murray United’s season launch on Saturday.

“I might be playing at Moreland City, but we’ll see what happens.”
