The inaugural Cancer Council NSW Ambrose will take place tomorrow with proceeds going to Border programs and beneficiaries.
Captain Andrew Scott said the club jumped at the opportunity when approached to establish a fundraiser.
“We have about 44 people signed on and looking at numbers we’ll hopefully raise up to $2000,” he said.
“We hope to make it an annual event and add more sponsors.”
Mr Scott said he knew people in the community who had utilised Cancer Council’s Transport to Treatment Service, which has travelled 70,000 kilometres over the past year, transporting people in and around Corowa to appointments in Albury.
“One of our really keen golfers who had melanoma passed away two years ago from cancer; he used the service and was looked after well,” he said.
“Cancer is an unfortunate part of life these days and the new regional centre in Albury has been a real Godsend.” Corowa is recognised as a melanoma “hot spot” by the the Cancer Institute of NSW, with men twice as likely to be diagnosed with melanoma and three times as likely to die from it as women of a similar age.
The golf club, with Albury, are members of the Improve Your Long Game campaign, encouraging positive sun protection behaviours.
CCNSW community relations coordinator Lily White said the club had held fundraisers in the past.
“For our first year it's more about engaging the community and ensuring the longevity of the event,” she said.
“I’m hoping to get other clubs involved as well – we will have a perpetual trophy happening – the next on is at Wagga.
“It’s an ambrose, so you don’t have to be a pro golfer, as long as there’s someone on your team who can hit a ball.”
Ms White said proceeds from the day would go towards the range of programs CCNSW was involved with in the region.
“We also co-fund the Hilltop accommodation centre in Albury and this provides support to thousands of cancer patients in the area and their families,” she said.
“The information centre that operates within the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre in Albury alone has provided assistance to over 800 people in need over the last year.”
- Four-person teams will take to the greens at 12.30pm on Sunday February 18, playing 18 holes for a great range of prizes, entry $50 per person. To register call the Corowa Pro Shop on (02) 6033 2162.
