Purtell last lined up for the club during the 2002 finals series and is looking forward to leading the side into battle against the Group 20 club in its opening trial match.
Thunder has retained only a handful of players from last season including Jon Huggett, Ben Taylor, Joe Silafau, Bronson Meehan and Alex Jones.
“It’s a new-look side,” president Rick O’Connell said.
“Adrian is looking forward to seeing the boys in action.
“It will be his first game for the club in a very long time.”
Thunder are expected to unveil most of their recruits including Robbie Byatt, Kane Hammond, Brad Hill and Adam Rodwell.
Leeton lost to Darlington Point-Coleambally 40-22 in last year’s elimination final.
Thunder will play Leeton in the under-18s at 1pm, followed by disability (2pm), leaguetag (2.30) and first grade (3.40pm) matches.
The Group 9 season starts on April 14.
