Jesse Challis won the $2500 Mary Porter Professional Development Scholarship, an annual prize provided by the former ACT politician to help a young person develop their theatrical skills. Challis was also one of seven Border nominations in the CAT Awards, which were held in Canberra on Saturday.
He auditioned successfully for the Music Theatre Studio 2018 short course with the Victorian College of the Arts at Melbourne University after completing year 12 last year.
Challis has performed in shows by Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, Livid Productions and Trinity Anglican College, earning his CAT Award nomination for the latter’s High School Musical.
CAT Awards chief executive Coralie Wood said Challis was the first applicant from Albury-Wodonga to win the scholarship.
“We’ve watched him come up over the years,” she said.
“We’re very proud of him.”
