Off the back of his best ever Southern 80 performance at Echuca this month, Phegan is hoping the hot form continues across the Easter weekend at Mildura.

Phegan and his crew claimed victory at Wentworth late last year and a second place finish at the prestigious Bridge to Bridge ski race in Sydney, before victories in his two main races at Echuca.

“We’ve been up the pointy end all year which is good,” Phegan said.

“We won the unlimited outboard social class and the F2 expert class (at the Southern 80).

“I won it in the 250 outboard class (SMOC) four years ago behind Tony Rowe from Melbourne, but that was the only success I’ve had down there in seven years.

“That was my first one in about five years, but four years later I’ve pretty much cleaned up for the whole weekend in our classes.

“I did four events over the weekend, including super social which is a full 80-kilometre race and we got a second outright in that against all the fastest outboards.

“We weren’t even expected to get a place, let alone finish second.

“It was a pretty big weekend, I skied 200 kilometres with two 20-kilometre races on the Saturday and two 80-kilometre races on the Sunday.”

Racing at speeds of more than 85 miles per hour, Phegan’s crew was only three seconds off the Southern 80 record in the unlimited outboard social category, and two seconds shy of the mark set by Supercars brothers Todd and Rick Kelly in the F2 expert event.

“It would have been nice to knock them off,” Phegan added.
