The Melbourne company that owns the coach has agreed to reimburse V/Line for the costs, which included a $750 ride to the capital.
The total invoice is yet to be determined.
Chiltern passenger Denise Rowland who was on the bus earlier in the day travelling from Melbourne noticed it was stalling at Benalla.
However, V/Line was not told of any faults before the breakdown at Chiltern on Sunday evening.
“Coach faults on train-replacement services are extremely rare and taxis are used as a last resort,” a V/Line spokesman said.
“It is frustrating any time there is an unplanned disruption and V/Line again apologises to passengers for the delay caused by this coach fault.”
