The court used for Davis Cup and Federation Cup ties in Sydney and Canberra in recent months has been relocated to Albury so curator Shayne Ried can give it the proper care and attention it requires.
“It’s the only portable tennis court in the world used the way this one is,” Ried said.
“We built it up in Caboolture, it was used in the Davis Cup in Sydney, then recently in Canberra for the Federation Cup.
“It needs a lot of maintenance, because the soil profile is only 120mm deep, it requires daily attention to make sure the moisture levels are right.
“It’ll look incredible, to have a world-class court in central Albury is fantastic.”
The specialised court won’t be available for use while it’s here, Albury Tennis Club vice-president Peter McMahon said maintaining the court locally while it wasn’t in use would increase Albury’s profile with Tennis Australia.
Two of the club’s four clay courts are to be resurfaced in the near future, and the remaining two have been made available to Tennis Australia for the Davis Cup court.
The court is guaranteed to remain at Albury when not in use for at least the next 12 months, but it is hoped it will stay for anywhere between three and five years.
“It’s been absolutely frenetic, we only found out it would be coming here late last week,” McMahon said.
“There’s been a lot of excitement around the club, people dropping in to ask what’s been happening, what work we’re doing.
“To see it come to fruition is fantastic, it’s good for the club and good for the community.”
Though it won’t be available to the public, the court will be used for gala days and other major events.
