And the Wodonga Primary School year 4 student roped in three of his teachers as well, the quartet joining all those who have supported World’s Greatest Shave this week.
The Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser, now in its 20th year, saw students, teachers, friends, relatives and community members across the Border and North East shave or colour their hair for cash.
For Alistair McBurnie, who shaved his head at Thurgoona Plaza Friday morning, the cause is personal as his son Hunter, 11, continues treatment for blood cancer.
“And it’s not just us, there’s other locals going through this,” he said.
“It’s the bigger picture, an awareness thing, people see me with a shaved head or one of the kids with a shaved head and they may ask why and you tell them why.
“So you’re highlighting the issue of blood cancer from now until your hair grows back.”
Five members of Team Hunter shaved their heads and the team’s total has passed $15,000.
Albury Public School teacher Tegan Sutton shaved her head on Wednesday and found the experience “terrifyingly nerve-racking”.
“But it just felt really good to be able to do something and have those kids be open to that conversation and know why and what the meaning behind it all is,” she said.
Miss Sutton’s new look, which raised about $2100, “is breezy and everyone wants to touch my head”.
Wodonga’s Jane Boland has helped care for professional golfer Jarrod Lyle, a family friend who’s faced three battles with leukaemia.
She faced the razor Friday night at The Clubhouse Bar and Bistro and appreciated people’s generosity, having raised $5000 so far.
“It’s just one way of helping that’s just a bit different,” she said.
“It doesn’t bother me, I mean, when it gets a bit colder I can wear beanies.”
James Fallon High School needed only $194 on Friday to reach their target and ensure teacher Pat Devaney loses his long ponytail of hair.
