Riewoldt, who was Albury's guest speaker at their annual pre-season launch, said the move would be a winner for clubs and fans.
“I like the idea,” Riewoldt said.
“It allows clubs to add to their areas of need, like Sydney losing their ruckman, and it's something new and exciting for the fans.
“I think it could work for everyone.”
While Riewoldt is optimistic about St Kilda's prospects this season, he expects the competition to be fierce for finals spots.
“I see St Kilda being like six or eight other clubs,” he said.
“I've got them in the six to 12 bracket.
“Hopefully closer to six.”
Riewoldt said Richmond deserved to start the season as flag favourites.
“They finished really strongly last year and look good again early,” he said.
“They will be a force again.”
Riewoldt is no stranger to the Border, having headlined a fundraiser in Albury last year for the charity launched by his late sister, Maddie.
“I’ve obviously been up in the area through (former teammate) Justin Koschitzke and it’s great to be back,” Riewoldt added.
“It’s good to get out to the country areas whenever you can.”
About 220 people attended Albury's luncheon at Paddy's, with the Tigers donating $5000 raised from the function to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision.
