Easter’s one of those weekends where just about everyone that owns a swag, tent, camper van, caravan or a warm blanket goes out camping.
One thing’s for sure, it’ll be hard to find a flat spot near water that hasn’t got a camp on it if you leave it until Saturday to set up.
I suppose it’s just one of those things, just about everyone gets those few days off and it’s a fantastic time of the year weather-wise. It’s also a great time of the year as far as fish are concerned, and it seems just about everything is on the chew at the moment.
Trout are going well in the streams, cod are going off just about everywhere and reddies are on the chew too, even if a lot of them aren’t that big.
If you’re thinking of heading to the coast, things are looking good too.
Marlin and kingies are having a go at the moment and the flatties, whiting, bream etc also having a dip in the estuaries.
All in all, Easter’s shaping up really well this year.
... just about everything is on the chew at the moment.
Here’s a couple of dates for you to save while we’re here.
This weekend, head to Corowa to the Fishing for the Future comp. Phone (02) 6033 1466 for details.
If you’ve got any expired flares, you can drop them off at the QE2 Square in Albury on April 4 between 3pm and 7pm.
Lake Mulwala Angling Club is running a comp on April 28 and 29, inquiries to Jeff Scoble on 0417 399 130.
There’s a trout strategy workshop being held by the Department of Primary Industries at Rydges Horizons, Jindabyne on May 17 from 3.45pm-8pm.
The Dartmouth Classic starts Friday, June 8 and finishes Sunday, June 10 (long weekend).
Might pay to scratch those down somewhere.
At A Glance
Dartmouth – should be great over the Easter break. Plenty of trout about, mainly down a bit with Cobra-style lures and small minnows trolled behind cowbells/fenders, lead line, downriggers, paravanes, etc all working well.
Streams – all looking perfect for Easter with heaps of hoppers and crickets about ensuring those little trout will be as fat as mud.
The Mitta – might be worth giving a miss this weekend though as they’re pushing another pulse of water through.
This means it’ll be high over the weekend but will be back to normal by Wednesday, just in time to settle for Easter luckily.
Hume – is the same old story, some fishos nailing some really nice fish, but most catching heaps and bringing home a feed of smallish keepers.
Casting plastics about is the method Hayden Burles is sticking with at the moment because he and a couple of mates have found a patch of good fish with a lot of them between 300mm and 420mm. I’ve heard of a couple of similar bags that have come in on yabbies as well, so I suppose it’s the same old story, keep moving and keep trying different stuff.
